Solar

Photovoltaic (PV) cells convert sunlight directly into electricity. Photo - meaning "light" and voltaic - meaning voltage, referring to electricity. They are made of semiconductor material, such as silicon, similar to those used in computer chips. The solar cell absorbs the sunlight. The energy of the absorbed light then moves along the cell. When this process occurs, the energy knocks loose electrons from their atoms, allowing the electrons to flow through the material to produce electricity.
